New River walk Enfield to Hertford on 04-09-2011 description (RTF document)

By train from north London to the start of the walk in Enfield:

  • Either travel to Enfield Chase station from stations including Finsbury Park, Harringay, Hornsey, Alexandra Palace, Bowes Park, Palmers Green. The most convenient train leaves Finsbury Park station (platform 5) at 08:47 am (calling shortly afterwards at the other stations on this line), and arrives at Enfield Chase at 09:34 am, in good time for the 10 am meeting outside the Crown and Horseshoes pub.

Get to the start of the walk as follows: turn right outside Enfield Chase station (onto Windmill Hill), walk down to the traffic lights, and continue for a few metres (you are now on Church Street) till you cross the bridge over the New River. Turn left just after the bridge (Gentleman's Row, with the landmark Trinity church and spire on the corner). It's best to walk on the grass here and to follow the river bank northwards. After a couple of hundred metres, cross on a footbridge to the footpath which continues on the left of the New River beside some cottage-style houses with the New River on your right. The Crown and Horseshoes is another 100 metres north.

There is also a train 30 minutes earlier.

  • Or travel to Enfield Town station from stations including South Tottenham, Seven Sisters, Bruce Grove, White Hart Lane, Silver Street and Edmonton Green. The most convenient train leaves South Tottenham station at 9.05 am (calling shortly afterwards at the other stations on this line), and arrives at Enfield Town at 9.33am - allowing time for the walk to the start outside the Crown and Horseshoes pub.

Get to the start of the walk as follows: turn left outside Enfield Town station (onto Church Street), and walk along this street (which becomes a busy shopping street) and past the end of the shops. Turn right into Gentleman's Row (Trinity Church is the large church with a spire on the corner).

  • Train times checked on 2 Sept, and provided in good faith, but you may wish to check yourself in case there are late-notified problems.

It's not essential, but John would appreciate a brief email / text / phone call to let him know you're going to be joining us.
